Whether it is happiness, sadness, gratitude, anger, or otherwise, we are tested through our responses to them. Being balanced emotionally is essential to physical, emotional, and mental health, as well as longevity. Trauma can upset this balance, and in its absence issues such as addictions, OCD, psychosomatic pain, depression, chronic illnesses, back pain, cancers, and - in extreme cases - mental illnesses can arise. This seminar looks at the means of balance Allah created within us, and how it has been compromised in many people today. In order to understand this balance, the personality of the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, is analyzed. The seminar discusses in topics of developmental trauma, ‘big ‘T’ trauma’ and ‘little ‘t’ trauma’, relationships, means of recovery, and more. The content of this discussion was based on the Qur’an, the Sunna, classical tafsirs, and the works of experts in the field of trauma recovery, such as Dr. Gabor Mate, Dr. Bessil Van Der Kolk, Dr. Peter Levine, and others. The Orphan – Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad – Cambridge Khutbahs Etc. https://seekersguidance.org/articles/general-artices/the-orphan-shaykh-abdal-hakim-murad-cambridge-khutbahs-etc/ Thu, 22 Mar 2012 20:37:28 +0000 http://seekersguidance.flywheelsites.com/blog/?p=4822 The Orphan - Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad - Cambridge Khutbahs Etc. Friday sermon (jum'ah khutba) - Sheikh Abdal Hakim Murad - Cambridge - 17th February 2012 - 26mins 44secs Seest thou one who denies the Judgement (to come)? Then such is the (man) who repulses the orphan (with harshness), And encourages not the feeding of the indigent. So woe to the worshippers Who are neglectful of their Prayers, Those who (want but) to be seen (of men), But refuse (to supply) (Even) neighbourly needs. In his first khutba given after the Winter hiatus the Sheikh begins with a recitation of Surah Ma'un, that Surah that would 'strike at the heart of the one with sincerity'. These verses cover the vices of boastfulness and pride, miserliness and hypocrisy, but before all of these harmful vices Allah in this chapter mentions the active repulsion of the orphan. To be an orphan is to be without the warmth, shelter and security that a parent's care provides naturally. That this should stir our compassionate instincts is understandable, as is Allah's stern reprimand to the one who would repulse them, especially since their condition in this life mirrors all of ours' on the Day of Judgment. The Sheikh goes on to explore the early life of the greatest orphan of them all, the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who was orphaned three times over, of his father, mother and then grandfather. What is striking in the life of the Prophet is that in society's eyes he had nothing, and yet Allah used him as an instrument to evoke the greatest changes in society the world has ever seen. This is why the sermon ends with a urgent exhortation to avoid the lassitude of being idle spectators and try as a community to care for those children who may then go on to change the world for the better. This cannot be done with the cold failing approach of the care home but with the prime Islamic virtue of mercy, evoked by the first hadith that scholars are asked to memorise when embarking on their studies: "Those who have mercy will receive the mercy of the Most Merciful. Have mercy on those who are on earth, the One in heavens will have mercy on you." Listen to this sermon Download this sermon (MP3, 24.5 MB) The Orphan – Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad – Cambridge Khutbahs Etc.

The Orphan - Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad - Cambridge Khutbahs Etc.
Friday sermon (jum'ah khutba) - Sheikh Abdal Hakim Murad - Cambridge - 17th February 2012 - 26mins 44secs

Seest thou one who denies the Judgement (to come)?
Then such is the (man) who repulses the orphan (with harshness),

And encourages not the feeding of the indigent.
So woe to the worshippers
Who are neglectful of their Prayers,
Those who (want but) to be seen (of men),
But refuse (to supply) (Even) neighbourly needs.

This cannot be done with the cold failing approach of the care home but with the prime Islamic virtue of mercy, evoked by the first hadith that scholars are asked to memorise when embarking on their studies:

"Those who have mercy will receive the mercy of the Most Merciful. Have mercy on those who are on earth, the One in heavens will have mercy on you."

Listen to this sermon

Download this sermon (MP3, 24.5 MB) SeekersGuidance.org full

Ghaddafi reminds me of Shakespeare's tyrant, Richard III: conniving, mutant, dark, and absolutely cruel, with no concern for his family, friends, or companions, let alone the people he rules over. He kills to get to power and maintain it, but as power diminishes before his eyes, he unleashes his fury and decimates his own army, only to end up alone, condemned to die a traitor to his country and people. I hope Ghaddafi's reign comes to an end soon for the sake of Libya's beautiful people. They deserve much better and, in sha Allah, they will get better. In each of our daily prayers, we should all pray for their succor and divine aid. God answers prayers, and there is no barrier between the oppressed and God. The iniquitous suffering Ghaddafi has ravaged upon Libya's cities and towns is worse than reprehensible and reveals his low nature. I have personally known some of those who were closest to him at his career's outset and then fled Libya as a result of his unspeakable treatment of his coterie; they know too well how evil this man is and has been. I have visited Libya once, which was in 1979 and was quite a bizarre experience. Ghaddafi had been in power for just a decade, seizing control through a military coup in 1969 while King Idris was out of the country for medical treatment. On this trip, I accompanied a British convert to Islam who was raising money for a mosque project in England. I had been Muslim for only a few years and was just starting my studies in Arabic, so I was not yet fluent. Everywhere we went, I saw posters that read, "Alijan fi kulli makan" (Committees in everyplace) based on the "Colonel-leader's" legerdemain of a true "people’s democracy" in which local committees decided their own fates. But after seeing through the illusion, Libyans, I was told, interpreted it to mean "Al-jan fi kulli makan," (Devils in everyplace). At the outset of the coup, in their misguided support, some of the less perspicacious Libyans actually chanted, "Iblis wa la Idris" ([Give us] the devil and not Idris). Beware of what you ask for; sometimes you actually get it. While in Libya, I visited the home of a delightful and cultured Libyan named Sidi Abdal Hamid Ben Halim, now deceased, may God have mercy on his soul. He had been a student at al-Azhar University before becoming a politician and went on to become an ambassador to Italy for Libya. At that time, his was the single most important Libyan diplomatic post. His brother, Mustafa, had been the prime minister under King Idris, who ruled Libya in the post-colonial period until the 1969 coup. From his close and personal knowledge of King Idris, Sidi Abdal Hamid recounted that not only was King Idris a just ruler, he was also a pious and erudite Muslim who dreamed of building Islamic schools and colleges throughout Africa with the newly acquired oil revenue. The King was of the Sanussi tradition and represented the best of the benign monarchies of the old Muslim world that crumbled throughout the twentieth century, only to be replaced by malevolent dictators, all of whom came in the name of progress, freedom, and democracy; despite their claims to reform, they became tyrants aspiring to the very monarchies they had supplanted by setting up their sons for ascension to their newly acquired "thrones." In a classic example of his feigned madness, Ghaddafi actually stated that "democracy" was a hybrid Arabic word from dema and karasi, and hence that "democracy" really means "the thrones continue." Most probably this nugget of "Ghaddafism" will end up in Bartlett’s, alongside the Bushisms. Never "misunderestimate" tyrants. (By the way, one who thinks Ghaddafi is certifiably insane is not paying enough attention. He is an excellent executor of the special interests that put him into power in the first place. The people's struggle for freedom inspires hope, but the dangers they face provoke fear and anxiety. Many question the role of religion in such difficult circumstances. Some fear mixing politics and religion. Others criticise the absence of leadership from religious figures, and say the ulema are out-dated and irrelevant. In this sermon, Sheikh Abdal Hakim provides a timely reminder of the fundamental importance for our leaders of 'enjoining the good and forbidding the bad' (amr bi-l-ma'ruf wa-nahy 'an al-muhkar) - so important that Imam al-Ghazali called it 'the greatest pillar' (al-rukn al-'azim) of the religion. Among the many great scholars and saints who have discharged this weighty responsibility, despite the grave threat to their livelihoods and even their lives, Sheikh Abdal Hakim mentions Hasan Kaimi Baba of Bosnia, Sheikh al-Hasan al-Yusi of Morocco and Sheikh Amadou Bamba of Senegal. They were true followers of the Prophetic example, because they resisted injustice and oppression. May Allah grant our leaders, our scholars and us ourselves the determination to do the same, and may He in His All-Encompassing Mercy guide and protect the people of Tunisia, Egypt and all over the world wherever they face cruelty, corruption and repression. Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara in all matters as he taught us the Suras of the Qur’an. He said, “If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two Rakat prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer): ‘Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi’ilmika, Wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, Wa as’alaka min fadlika al-’azlm Fa-innaka taqdiru Wala aqdiru, Wa ta’lamu Wala a’lamu, Wa anta ‘allamu l-ghuyub. They had every reason to be annoyed. They were locked in the luggage hold of a rickety old bus winding its way through the hilly Anatolian countryside. My friend and I were on our way to see a saint. In Islamic tradition, they are called the friends of God – who through rigorous piety and service to others have achieved such closeness to God that they become spiritual guides. Their tombs are places of blessing. Our destination was the tomb of Yunus Emre, a 13th century mystic whose poetry, written in simple language, could be understood by peasants and paupers. We arrived in the town bearing the poet’s name just before dusk. A lone passerby pointed us down a long road leading to a deserted tomb. We said a prayer. Afterwards, we entered the adjacent mosque for evening prayers expecting many congregants. We found just three – including the Imam. His name was Ihsan and we later learnt he was also the cleaner, the handyman and the one with the keys. We could hardly speak Turkish, but the language of the backpacker is universal. Soon we were marching through pitch dark fields to his home for dinner. I’ll never know how he told his wife we were coming, but we arrived to a feast: steaming cabbage rolls, fragrant lamb stew and white rice, along with dripping honeycombs, and fresh cherry juice. It turned out Ihsan’s job at the mosque was unpaid – an act of love. Through an elaborate mix of drawing pictures and broken Turkish we told him we were on a journey to visit the great shrines of the East. He beamed with pride – feeling at once part of our quest. As we walked back into town to catch the only train of the day, he stopped to introduce us at the local cafe. He told our story as if he was the one travelling. His friends joined us at the station, tickets in hand. While with Ihsan, we were not to pay for anything. As the train pulled in, we said thank you. He hugged us and said, “Thanks are never given to one’s brothers.” As we pulled away, tears streamed down Ihsan’s face. We came to visit one saint and found another. "I am not here on earth for strife, Love is the mission of my life. Hearts are the home of the loved one; I came here to build each true heart." -Yunus Emre -- Abdul Rehman Malik is programmes manager at The Radical Middle Way Project and contributing editor at Q-News Media. In this sermon, Sheikh Abdal Hakim outlines the Qur'anic and prophetic description of the poor (fuqara') and shows why it is important not to be afraid of poverty as we often are today. This is not because it is necessarily a good thing in itself to be poor, or on the other hand a bad thing to be rich or powerful, but because of the beauty and dignity of cultivating reliance on Allah whatever one's outward state. Friday sermon (jum'ah khutba) by Sheikh Abdal Hakim Murad - 30 October 2009 - Cambridge - 22 mins 30 secs Listen to this sermon Download this sermon cambridge khutbas etc.: Poverty & Riches - The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) famously prayed to be resurrected among the masakin (poor, downtrodden, oppressed), but what does it mean to be miskin and what was the proph... cambridge khutbas etc.: Poverty & Riches

The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) famously prayed to be resurrected among the masakin (poor, downtrodden, oppressed), but what does it mean to be miskin and what was the prophetic attitude to poverty or hardship? It's not one for the audio purists unfortunately but we've done our best. It's definitely worth a listen for Sheikh Abdal Hakim's perceptive and invigorating review of the history of Islamism. Through this reading, he makes an analysis of some of the most fundamental aspects of the umma's reaction to modernity and its current state. As a counter-point to these sobering reflections, he also offers some optimistic thoughts on the future. He emphasises firstly the importance of the Qur'anic principle of responding with what is better, and not being dragged into the abusive slanging matches so often sadly seen on Internet discussion fora and elsewhere. He then outlines some of the important points of discussion that can be had with committed Christians who want to engage in respectful dialogue. These points include: the importance in all religious traditions of God's love for the poor and outcast, and the problems of being identified with worldly, especially military, power; the importance of respecting that the Divine Love makes redemption available throughout history, not only during a defined period; and the need to deconstruct the stereotype often imposed upon Muslims (as on Jews in the past) as being legalistic. As the sheikh points out, the Muslim theology which considers God, while the source of Justice, as absolutely free in His Love and Mercy to forgive who He chooses seems a lot less legalistic than a theology that considers mankind's sinfulness a debt that He must collect. He begins by analysing the fragmentation of the modern world, in which different aspects of human existence and even of an individual are disconnected from each other. As humanity learns more and more about the material details of our existence, there seems to be a correlating reduction in our real understanding of the overall meaning of creation and our place in it. Yet how can we find an antidote to this in the practice of the Prophetic sunna, which, superficially at least, is concerned with the very fine details of our day-to-day life? The sheikh explains the importance firstly of the fact that it is a source of harmony by allowing us to integrate our outward and inward states and conform both to the fundamental reality of our existence. Secondly, the sunna is a shelter and liberation from the imprisonment with which our uncultivated egos (nafs) and desires (hawa') threaten us. To the modern eye, trained to judge only by the criterion of personal freedom, limiting oneself to a prescribed type of behaviour seems a surefire route to misery and repression. Yet what real freedom is there in living according to the unrelenting demands of the nafs, which will always push for more and more because any apparent happiness it finds in transitory acts is just as fleeting? Unfortunately, for many of us religion has become just another way of acting out the hyperactive impulses of our unquiet souls. But, the sheikh reminds us, its real function is just the opposite - a route to inner contentment (sakina) and thereby freedom.
